the mission of the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation, Inc. is to promote nonviolence, voting rights, civic engagement, social justice, democracy, international peace, human rights and civil liberties and to preserve and study African American history and culture and the history of the civil rights movement in the United States. The Foundation was established in 2017 as a Georgia nonprofit corporation and is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt corporation.
John and Lillian were united not only in marriage, but also in their passion for purposeful living and perpetual learning and an unwavering devotion to helping others. Congressman Lewis’ history of fighting for racial equality is well known. Less well known are Lillian Lewis’ accomplishments as a teacher in Nigeria, a Peace Corps volunteer, a librarian and her husband’s closest friend and advisor. It is the very human side of this remarkable couple, their robust family life, interests, dreams and the decisions they made together that led them into the pages of history.
